Projects

63 Thomas Street , Manchester

Complete internal and external refurbishment of an existing building in Manchester’s thriving Northern Quarter. The building sits on a corner site and has elevations to Thomas Street, Oak Street and Carpenters Lane.

The building has been in disuse for some time and Reid Architects were asked to provide a creative design solution that would bring the building back to life and reinstate retail accommodation at ground floor, along with office accommodation to the existing first and second floors.

The building’s commercial appeal will be enhanced through the introduction of new office accommodation by the insertion of a mezzanine floor within the existing roof space. This mezzanine will sit above the existing second floor and have an abundance of natural light and air due to the introduction of a new roof light and zinc clad dormer. The dormer will also provide access onto a small external roof deck.

The practice is renowned for its creative and high quality work on existing buildings - utilising the original fabric and complementing this with reclaimed and carefully selected new components.

Work is currently being undertaken on site and, when complete in Summer 2009, the refurbished 63 Thomas Street will make a successful return to the Northern Quarter streetscape.
