As part of the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, Reid Architects were part of a Consortium led by Aura on the Salford Schools bid.
As part of the bid Reid worked with the design team on learning zones and their evolving use in response to on-going changes in educational best practice and improvements in supporting resources such as ITC.
Final design submission included projections of learning zone design for years 2010 and 2020. The learning zones promote a transformational learning environment which responds to the perceived changes in learning in the future. Through collaborative learning and personal learning spaces the zones can change and adapt to varying educational needs. A flexible structure and service strategy is overlaid to facilitate maximum flexibility in growth and expansion.
Also focusing on outside spaces allowed external learning environments to be created which could spill out from the building through the communal dining spaces.
Circulation within the zones is designed to cause less disruption through the larger school building. Key spaces, such as staff hubs and toilet areas, were located to be easily monitored and minimise bullying.
