117-119 Portland Street, Manchester

Conversion of a vacant basement in a Grade II Listed former cotton warehouse in Manchester to provide habitable offices for the City Council. Owner Bruntwood Estates Limited appointed Reid Architects to provide a contemporary architectural solution to the integration of office into a listed building.

The designs make use of the robust brick, timber and iron existing materials and complements them with clean minimal insertions to fit the tenants brief that float within the existing space. The enhancement of natural daylight with roof light improves the quality of the interior spaces.

Connectivity is a priority and the remit of the design brief covers the re-design of the ground floor entrance and common areas to bring the basement access into prominence, providing a level access to the main entrance lobby.
